At the moment, the Kaunas cultural center “Tautos namai” (Vytautos pr. 79) is hosting a personal photo exhibition “Moments” by Vilnius photographer Mindaugas Norkaus. This documentary photo series was already exhibited in 2014. in the “Skalvija” cinema in Vilnius, 2015 Vilnius Town Hall, Alytus Jurgis Kunčinas Public Library, Marijampole Cultural Center, Vievios Library and elsewhere. Around 1980, M. Norkus started working for Lithuanian television, there were great opportunities to photograph famous representatives of culture and society he met at various events, capture portraits of people he met, and capture memorable moments. M. Norkus started working at Lithuanian television from the age of 18: first as a worker, scenery builder, prop designer, painter, and later as a cameraman’s assistant. “I took care of the organization of filming, decorations, booking hotels.” The first photograph of M. Norkus was created exactly 39 years ago – it is a portrait of Viktor Kuprevičius, Giedrias Kuprevičius’ father. During the opening of the exhibition, the photographer mentioned that he had been waiting for the negative of this created photograph for 39 years. A little later, fate led him to the Lithuanian Film Studio, where he worked as a deputy director of feature films, assisting director Vytautas Žalakevičius at the Studio 2000 film studio. Remembering his work, M. Norkus says that now his duties would be called “producer’s assistant”. The photo exhibition “Akimirkas” captures the portraits of actors, writers, and artists of famous cultural and public figures, some of these people have already traveled: actress Rūta Staliliūnaitė, writer Jurga Ivanauskaitė, photographer and traveler Paulius Normantas, poet Sigitas Geda, philosopher, professor Leonidas Donskis. The portrait genre has its own specifics in documentary photography. In the photographs captured by M. Norkaus – portraits of well-known cultural and public figures, theater actors – the unexpected moment is very important. In portrait photography, posture, relationship with the environment, emphasis on clothing details, features of facial expression and gaze are very important. Speaking about photography, M. Norkus says: “Cinema is no longer interesting to me, but photography still attracts me. Maybe it’s just that I don’t like that new modernist photography, I stick to portraits, taking pictures of the streets of Vilnius”. When presenting the exhibition, its author succinctly summarized: “These are the moments of my life.” The exhibition presents more than forty portraits of famous cultural and public figures, which have been taken since 1975 and which the author has been creating until now. Speaking about the creation of photographs and the creative process, M. Norkus emphasized that he does not call himself a photographer, but rather an observer or recorder of events. The heroes of the photographer’s portraits also participated in the opening of the exhibition: the legendary actress of the older generation Regina Varnaitė and the sculptor Leonas Strioga. The author of the exhibition presented them each with their portrait, which is also displayed in the exhibition, and the honored guests left autographs with dedications on the photographs for the author. “Mindaugas Norkus was always thrown into some kind of art vortex by fate, always surrounded by people. And always creative, sometimes strange, sometimes characterized by difficult characters, but without a doubt – original and interesting, capturing some moment of their life…”. This is what writer, screenwriter, director, actor Alvydas Šlepikas wrote about M. Norkaus’ photographs. Both while working on television and radio, M. Norkus always had a camera with him. “Wherever I went, I always had my best friend the camera with me. I used to try to (for) capture the people nearby in various situations back when photo tape was still used. Sometimes I didn’t like the shot, but it’s impossible to go back to that moment.”
M. Norkus worked not only in documentary photography, but also in the field of documentary cinema: M. Norkus has worked on the creation of the following films: “Weekend in Hell” (dir. V. Žalakevičius) “Wedding in the Forest” (dir. A. Araminas), “Iron Princess” (dir. A. Aramins), “Ticket to Taj Mahak” (dir. A. Puipa), “The Awakening”, “The Thrush – Green Bird” (dir. J. Vaitkus), “The Beast Coming Out of the Sea” ” (directed by V. Žalakevičius), “Opera at home” (about the artist Liudas Truikis from Kaunas). During the entire period of his creative career, M. Nork managed to capture many well-known actors: R. Adomaitis, R. Staliliūnaitė, G. Girdvainis, R. Ramanauskas, D. Banionis and many others, whom he met on film sets and became good friends. The author himself says: “The people whose faces have been preserved by my photo strip are priceless diamonds of Lithuanian culture…” M. Nork had to work together with the actress Ona Juodyte-Chadaravičiene in the making of the video film “Paskenduole”, where the actress Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė played the main role. A separate cycle of photographs will consist of portraits of Lithuanian directors: A. Araminas, G. Lukšas, J. Vaitkus, A. Puipa. M. Norkus became very good friends with M. Giedriu. An amateur film was made about K. Kymantaitė. A separate cycle of photographs could be dedicated to painters and musicians (S. Sondeckis, R. Ščedrinas, prima ballerina Maja Pliseckaja are also immortalized in M. Norkus’ photos). In the “Akimirkos” exhibition, M. Norkus presents some of his portraits, which are both an important fragment and testimony of the individual creator’s life and activities, as well as a part of the photographic narrative captured by Lithuanian culture. “Very often I think: why didn’t I record the meeting with this or that cute, interesting, famous person – I lost, I didn’t capture the moment. Time is merciless, it delays everything, envelops it in fog. Memories fade and you would no longer recognize people you once knew, if it were not for a photo – a suspended moment…” – says M. Norkus. Photographer M. Norkaus’ personal exhibition “Moments” will be open until February 12 at the Kaunas Culture Center “Tautas namai” (79 Vytautos Ave.). Art critic Gabriele Kuizinaitė

Exhibition “Quartet. Lithuanian Accents” in Germany August 26 of this year. 6 p.m. The Hobecko Gallery (Leitzkau, Germany) located in the historic castle of the Munchausen family will host the exhibition of four well-known artists from Lithuania “Quartet. Lithuanian accents” opening. The curator of the exhibition is Jūratė Sližytė, an artist living and creating in Germany. At the exhibition, well-known and recognized artists who create in different fields present their works: Andrius Miežis (painting), Deivis Slavinskas (painting), Gintaras Kuras (jewelry), Jūratė Sližytė (wooden miniatures). Andrius Miežis, a painter born in Vilnius and living in Kretinga, has held 20 personal exhibitions, participated in more than twenty national exhibitions, as well as international exhibitions in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Georgia and other countries. in 2012 The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania granted him the status of an artist. A. Miežis combines painting and photomontage, pop art and postmodern stylistics in his work. Painter A. Miežis depicts the stories of different fantastic figures/animals in large-format canvases of bright colors, which are decorated with effective details of geometric shapes, which turn into small theatrical scenes with a strong sense of irony and playfulness. Irony and grotesque are extremely important in the artistic narrative of A. Mieži’s painting. Young generation painter Davis Slavinskas lives and works in Kaunas. However, the creative experience of this artist includes the traditions of Western and Eastern countries D. Slavinskas 1987-1991. graduated from the Kaunas Art School, 1991-1995. Vytautas the Great University, where he completed his bachelor’s studies in computer graphics. 1995-1998 studied with A. Šatas and V. Kašinskas. 1995-2014 worked as a designer in Lithuania, Germany and England, simultaneously painting and participating in exhibitions. He has won international awards for art and design. D. Slavinskas participated in thirty personal and group exhibitions in Great Britain, Italy, Spain, and Lithuania. His works have been acquired by private collections: in the USA, Great Britain, France, Norway, Lithuania. His creative style balances between the search for chaos, harmony, balance and rhythm. The musical sound of the lines is strongly felt, the work has a strong connection with the aesthetics of Eastern cultures, which helps highlight the emotional plane. I dare to divide D. Slavinska’s paintings into two groups: flat canvases with bright colors and unconventional texture reminiscent of textile art and expressive canvases dominated by theatricality – fantastic miniature decorativeness, figurativeness, a unique artistic narrative, which is also helped to create rhythmicity and coloristics. The field of jewelry is represented at the exhibition by jeweler Gintaras Kuras. G. Kuras was born in 1957, studied the profession of jeweler with folk craftsman Algirdas Petrusevičius. in 1978 started working at the Kaunas Dailė kombinat as a jeweler in the amber-metal processing workshop. in 1980 He was given the title of folk master. He is a member of the Union of Lithuanian Folk Artists, Metal art Guild of Canada, the Guild of Jewelry Designers (Britain). He has held personal exhibitions in various Kaunas galleries: Kaunas Langas, Balta and Kaunas Design Salon. Participated in group exhibitions: in Estonia, Japan, Russia, America, Canada, Israel.
The works of Kaunietis G. Kuros are dominated by various jewelry and metal technologies: he creates jewelry of original shapes, using precious materials for the creation of jewelry: brass, copper, melchior, German silver, and often experiments by combining them with non-traditional materials. G. Kur’s work stands out for its contemporary modern forms, precisely perfected details. Often, the jewelry created by G. Kur takes the shape of a nut – coconut, a deformed stone or a shell. In this exhibition, Gintaras Kuras presents a collection of newly created jewelry. Jūratė Sližytė is a graphic artist, she has been a member of the German Union of Artists since 2006. Juratė graduated from J. Naujalis School of Art, studied at the Šiauliai Pedagogical University, later at the Kaunas Faculty of the Vilnius Art Institute. in 1990 J. Sližytė won the international scholarship “Artists Unlimited”, since then she lives and creates in Germany. The artist has created a number of interiors, and has also worked in the field of industrial products for many years. She has participated in about 40 international and group exhibitions, organized 8 personal exhibitions. The artist organizes and implements ambitious international projects not only in Germany, but also in Lithuania, and collaborates with artists from various fields. J. Sližytė is an artist and exhibition curator and organizes international art auctions, plein airs and biennales. By organizing various events in the historic castle of the Munchausen family, Jūratė Sližytė hopes that the cozy area of Leitzkau in Germany will become a meeting and presentation place for Lithuanian artists representing various fields. The artist herself combines as many as three different technologies in her work, her graphics have distinct features characteristic of both Western and Lithuanian culture. This exhibition is the start of a new project conceived by artist J. Sližytė “Jūratė and her friends”. It is very important for her to present the artist not only as a creator, but also as a friend, a friend, to present his work to German art lovers. In a joint exhibition of four well-known Lithuanian artists, graphic artist Jūratė Sližytė presents ten small-scale graphic stories in wood. Her work is greatly influenced by Eastern culture, from these cultures J. Sližytė uses some symbols and various plots in her works, combining them with a personal narrative. There are many small details and symbols in J. Sližytė’s work, she looks for new ways of self-expression in every technique and every work of art. As in the large-format canvases of the painter A. Miezis, the grotesque and ironic relationship with the world is also important in the short stories of J. Sližytė. At the exhibition, she presents the works “Cacti”, “Fish”, “Cloud maker”, “Fitness for all time”, “Look”, “Turtle”, “Titanic of tea”, “Aquarium”, “Consumption”… Everyone will participate in the opening of the exhibition four artists. Organizers of the exhibition: Förderkreis Kultur und Denkmalpflege e. V. The exhibition will be open until September 30. Gabriele Kuizinaite Hello, I am sharing a photo report by photographer Graf Pauliaus from graphic artist Oksana Judakova’s photo exhibition “Both own and foreign land, Altai”. The exhibition is currently being held at the Kaunas City Museum, M. and K. Petrauskės Lithuanian Music Department (address: K. Petrausko str. 31). The exhibition will be open until August 31.

At the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Berlin, written by: Dr. Volker Niemer and Dr. Karin Parutch. We share the evaluation of the exhibition in German:
in der litauischen Botschaft, Charitéstr. 9 in Berlin
